Calcium and OsteoporosisBy Mary Rose Antonio Calcium and osteoporosis are somewhat like bread and butter. Contrary to common belief, it is important to take calcium while you are young and not wait until you hit 40' or 50's to start thinking about it. Children between the ages of 1-3 years old must take a daily calcium. The recommended intake is at least 500 mg. Ages between 4-8 years old need about 800 mg, and ages 9-18 years old require a daily intake of 1300 mg calcium. These are highly recommended in order to achieve the maximum growth potential. Unfortunately, we are not clear as to how much calcium we need to take and in what form, etc. It has been discovered that found out that children are taking in calcium below the recommended. Calcium and osteoporosis are directly linked to each other due to the fact that 99% of the body's calcium is found mostly in your bones. Please keep in mind that the recommended calcium intake is not intended for your bones' use only. Anytime your body require calcium, it will be expelled from your bones into your bloodstream. The problem with this process is that since the calcium is what gives your bones the strength it needs, the less calcium your bones have, the weaker your bones are going to be. Calcium and osteoporosis depends largely on person's gender, menopausal status, and of course, age. Studies have shown that females 11 years old and above shows a decline in calcium intake. Either they do not take the recommended amount or because of poor diet. Soda, after all, is more popular, more inviting, and most available to teenagers than milk. There is a huge need for education on the relationship between calcium and osteoporosis. Women of all ages should be more focused and pay more attention to this matter because women are more susceptible to risks and problems associated with lack of calcium. Due to the availability of fast foods and instant microwaveable foods, the less calcium women are taking nowadays. They are not getting the right amount of calcium a woman's body needs for bones to stay stronger. Don't wait too long before you consider consulting your doctor for the appropriate amount of calcium for your age and health condition. Osteoporosis is a silent debilitating disease, it may be too late before you know it. Some women experience a fracture just by staying in bed. Women with osteoporosis breaks a bone easily and instantly without even falling. Aside from taking calcium supplements, consider drinking organic green tea.
