Why does bone mass start to decline in postmenopausal women?
Answered By Editor
Usually, a woman who is in the postmenopausal
stage is affected by osteoporosis because at
this stage, the woman's body stops producing
estrogen. Another factor is that there is an
imbalance between the volumes of the various
bone components. These bone components are
removed during normal metabolism which
results in bone density loss. This condition
usually occurs within the first ten years
after menopause. This is why it is important
for women to intake adequate calcium and
vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis from
getting worse or at least slow down the
development of the condition.
